SmartStart goals

We have the ambitious goal of reaching one million three and four-years old’s annually, by 2025, and creating access to affordable quality early learning to communities without. We want to change the future of our country, and we’re doing it one child at a time.

Between 2015 – 2018, we came very close to reaching our target of getting 50 000 children into the SmartStart programme, while building a network of 5 000 licensed franchisees to provide affordable quality early learning.

With a solid pipeline of public and private funding, we are confident of the strong platform that we are creating to enable further scaling. We are excited about the love, care and stimulation that these children are receiving.

The importance of scale

What is a
social franchise?

A franchise is an organisation that has branches (or Franchisees) in many different places. They offer the same products and services and they share a common brand (they look and feel the same). A franchise delivers the same thing to many different people across the country, at the same time. We call this delivering at scale. Smartstart is a social franchise because it is a non-profit organisation and is for the benefit of young children across South Africa.

The social
franchising model

SmartStart works on a social franchising model, which allows us to reach our goal of one million children annually by 2025.

Our model includes the hub who works directly with the franchisors or implementing partners, the club coaches and club leaders and also the SmartStarters who run their own SmartStart early learning micro enterprises. Each member of the social franchise model, or our ecosystem as we often call it, is working towards reaching our shared goal, one million children annually by 2025.

Our social franchise is not only for the benefit of young children, but the country as a whole.
